Vale Kevin Crandell VK4VKX

On 14 May 2026, Kevin Crandell VK4VKX left us and became a Silent Key.

Kevin was called for National Service and spent two years training as a Sapper.  Just before he could be sent to Vietnam, he was pulled aside and dispatched to New Guinea as part of a team dealing with unexploded ordinance.   In real life he worked in the electricity supply industry, and is credited with helping to refine the metering process and a reduction in fault reports incorrectly attributed to meters that weren’t in fact faulty.

Kevin was a member of the Darling Downs Radio Club for more than 25 years, and forged many lasting relationships since he moved to Toowoomba from Roma. Kevin contributed solidly to the success of the club. He served for nine years over two terms on the Management Committee as treasurer, and was a member of the Steering Committee for a further nine years.

For the last ten years Kevin was Net Controller for the Club’s weekly 2m Sunday Net, and his presence in that role is missed.

On behalf of the Management Committee, club members, the Downs ham community, and all the amateur radio operators with whom Kevin had contact on VHF and HF, we extend our condolences to his wife Jean, to his family and all who stood alongside Kevin.

The family has announced that a Funeral Service will be held on Monday 25 May 2026, at 1200 AEST.

The location is Hiram Phelp Funerals, 52 Herries St, Toowoomba.
